Challenge

Given the sites historical use as a power station, we developed a remediation strategy to deal with the made ground and pulverised fly ash, for approval by the relevant authorities prior to commencing the main platform works.

There was also an 8m level difference alongside the Manchester Ship canal that required a design and build solution. At the same time a new compound and access road was to be built. The project included: –

  • Design and build
  • 400m access road
  • 10,000m² Car park and infrastructure for offices
  • Remediation and processing of made ground
  • Control of invasive species
  • Reinforced earth embankment
  • Earthworks
  • Aggregate platforms

The enabling works were to be completed during the autumn and winter which would prove difficult given the volatile nature of the made ground.

Solution

An accelerated design and remediation strategy were sorted. All processing was completed ahead of the winter which allowed us to provide a structurally sound foundation where the required ground strengths were achieved.

The aggregate sub formations were completed during the winter months, which allowed the drainage, earthing, ducting and piling to commence on time.

The underlying ground strata proved a difficult obstacle in designing the embankment. A key concern in the use of traditional piling would have created pathways for potentially contaminated land to the canal and underlying aquafers. We were able to design a non-intrusive solution, introducing shear keys and aggregate to provide form the embankment.

At ACS Midlands we have many capabilities. Get in touch for more information on this project or to discuss your requirements.

Project

Club Shop, BCFC

The renovation of the club shop to meet the requirements of Nike retail standards. This included strip out, forming new shop frontage facilitated by major alterations to the existing steel frame, new internal walls, M&E, HVAC, shopfitting, flooring and decoration.

Project

Pavilion Building, Wantage

The client required a sports pavilion to utilise a plot at the centre of a large new build housing development in Wantage, near Oxford.

Project

Phases 4E, 4G and Eastern Lakes

This 600-acre former steelworks was being transformed into a mixed-use development with housing. We were asked to provide earthworks solutions across a complex site with challenging ground conditions.
